Young Apprenticeships
Young Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to gain workplace experience for up to two days a week and study for a related qualification. If your school offers them they allow you to:
- study the normal school curriculum, including English, maths, science and ICT
- take a vocational qualification such as an NVQ as one of your option choices
- have in total 50 days work experience with an employer, training provider or at college over years 10 and 11
- keep your options open as you will be able to go on either to a full Apprenticeship in the same occupational area or move on to a general or work-related course at school or college.
Qualifications taken on Young Apprenticeships
You gain a level 2 vocational qualification that is broadly equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C. You may also gain other awards. For example, if you do a Young Apprenticeship in Hospitality, you may gain a BTEC First Diploma or NVQ Level 2. You may also gain a level 1 certificate in Health and Safety in the Workplace and level 2 awards in Food Safety and
Practical Food Safety in Catering.
