If solvents are legal aren't they okay?
It’s legal to sell and buy solvents because they include everyday items such as:
- Aerosols - for example hairspray and air fresheners
- Paints
- Surgical spirit
But this doesn’t make them okay. If a shopkeeper suspects you are using them to inhale them s/he can refuse to sell them to you and you need to be 18 to buy gas lighter refills.
Why?
- It is very easy to breathe in too much – and just a little too much can cause a coma
- In the short term you’re at risk from nausea, vomiting, blackouts, hallucinations, and risky behaviour when you’re high. Long term abuse can lead to damage to the brain, liver and kidneys.
If you want help to stop the habit or you’re worried about a friend you can contact Re-Solv or call their national helpline 01785 810762. Re-Solv provides advice and support to users and their families. You can also check out the local organisations who can help.
